The couple was born in St. Louis, she relocated to New York City at the age of only a few days. In 1991, she earned an art bachelor's degree in art from Barnard College. That same year, she was hired as a job as an entry-level employee at An American Place. However, Guarnaschelli's cooking experience began when she watched her mother try out a variety of recipes at home, while she was editing cookbooks. Following her time at Larry Forgione in New York as well as France, Los Angeles she also worked in Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Guarnaschelli eventually became the the executive chef of Butter. Guarnaschelli appeared on the Food Network's Iron Chef America where she faced Cat Cora in the Farmers Market Battle of 2007. She has since appeared as an Iron Chef America judge and, in 2011, competed on The Next Iron Chef season four where she was the third place finisher. She also competed with The Food Network Challenge Ultimate Thanksgiving Feast episode and lost the contest. Following the conclusion of season 4, she was appointed Geoffrey Zakarian's sous-chef. In 2008, she became the host of Food Network's The Cooking Loft with Alex Guarnaschelli where she teaches a small group of students instructing them on how to reimagine classic recipes.
